Tips to unscramble words faster

If you feel stuck, don’t peek at the answer key right away, try the following tips instead.

  • Look for common letter pairs. There are letters, that often appear together, common examples are: TH, ER, ON, and AN. If you can spot these letter combinations, you can try to connect them with the remaining letters.
  • Find prefixes and suffixes. Look for prefixes and suffixes and try connecting them with the rest of the letters. Common prefixes are: ANTI-, DE-, DIS-, EM-, EN-, IM-, IN, IR-, MID-, NON-, PRE-, RE-, SUPER-, UN-, UNDER-.  Common suffixes are: – ABLE, -ED, -ES, -FUL, -ING, -ITY, -IVE, -LESS, -LY, – MENT, -NESS, -TION.
  • Identify the vowels. Look at the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and try to construct the word around them.
  • Use a pen and paper. Unscrambling words in your head can be pretty difficult, so grab a pen and a piece of paper to write down word fragments and try out different letter combinations.

Download the PDF file and print it at home or at your local print shop. Print as many copies as you need.

Print on standard 8.5″×11″ paper (US Letter). To print on A4 paper select “Fit to page” in your printer settings.

To make the page more durable print on heavier-weight paper or cardstock.

If you want to make this activity reusable you can laminate the pages. You can also place them in dry-erase pockets and have kids use dry-erase markers so they can use them over and over again.
